Know More About Your Liver and Its Functions
The liver is often called the engine of our body, working tirelessly around the clock. It has a remarkable capacity to compensate for damage, but repeated injuries can eventually lead to decompensation — when symptoms start to appear. Without intervention, this can progress to liver failure.
At this stage, the liver's reserve is exhausted, and a liver transplant becomes the definitive treatment.
Functions of the Liver
- 🔄 Digestion & energy storage (glycogen)
- 🧪 Produces bile for fat digestion
- 🩸 Filters blood & removes toxins
- 📦 Stores vitamins, iron, and fats
- 🧹 Detoxifies drugs and harmful substances
- 🛡️ Supports immune defense
- 🧬 Synthesizes proteins, hormones, and clotting factors
When Do You Need a Liver Transplant?
Liver transplantation is indicated in patients with:
- End-stage liver disease (cirrhosis)
- Acute liver failure (not responding to treatment)
- Acute-on-chronic liver failure
- Liver cancer with cirrhosis
- Inborn or congenital liver disorders
- Metabolic liver diseases
- Other complex conditions needing definitive treatment
⚠️ Complications like ascites, jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, GI bleeding, or kidney failure can significantly increase the risk of death if not treated promptly with a liver transplant.
Regular surveillance is critical since cirrhosis is a pre-cancerous condition — early detection of liver cancer improves survival rates dramatically.
